The 26-27 Hagan Ski & Binding Guide, Explained

TL;DR:

Our lineup is organized by the kind of skier you are, not by a wall of model numbers. Adventure skiers get the Boost series, All-Round skiers get Core series, and Performance skiers get Ultra series. Every ski has a binding we'd put on it, and the quick chooser below gets you to a setup in about a minute.

If you've shopped for touring gear lately, you know the feeling. There are more skis, bindings and skins than any human needs, and every one of them is "the lightest" or "the best" at something.

We do it differently. We make skis, bindings, boots, skins and poles, and nothing else, so we picked the combinations we'd actually ski ourselves. This guide walks through the 26-27 lineup by how you ski, tells you what goes with what, and skips the spec-sheet hazing.

Quick note on numbers: weights are at the catalog's sample length and can vary by about 70 g. The "uphill:downhill" ratios are our own character ratings, so read them as a feel, not a physics result.

Which skier are you? (the 60-second version)

•             I want to go outside, move, and get home happy. → All-Round: Core Carbon

•             The descent is the point. → Adventure: Boost

•             Every gram counts, and the objective is big. → Performance: Ultra

•             Something a bit different. → Special: Off Limits and Off Trace

All-Round: Core Carbon

Exercise for the body, quiet for the mind. The Core Carbon series is for the skier who wants one ski for most days and doesn't want to think about it. It's where most people should start, and where plenty happily stay.

•             Core Carbon 89: Our flagship all-rounder and the one ski for most days. 89 mm underfoot, 1,300 g at 170 cm, with a 35:65 uphill:downhill character. It loves to turn and is lively without being a handful.

•             Core Carbon 89 Lite: The same ski, slimmed down. 1,160 g at 170 cm. A good fit for lighter skiers who tour often and want less fatigue on long days.

•             Core Carbon 84: Narrower and more precise, with a 50:50 character that's happiest on firm snow and steep, technical terrain. 1,250 g at 172 cm.

•             Core Carbon 84 Lite: The lightest of the series at 1,120 g at 172 cm, also 50:50. Efficient, nimble and easy on long climbs.

Binding pairing: The Pin Up 10 EVO is our go-to for the 89 and 89 Lite, and the Pin Up 8 EVO suits the narrower 84s. Want something beefier for the descent? Step up to the Core 12 EVO.

Adventure: Boost

For the days when the descent is the point. The Boost series is our freeride line: more float in powder, and still surprisingly good on hard pack.

•             Boost 105: The flagship and the most freeride-focused ski in the lineup. 105 mm underfoot, 1,600 g at 177 cm, 10:90 character, and a Karuba and Poplar core that keeps the weight manageable for its width. Built for steep terrain, big lines and technical powder.

•             Boost 99 POW: A touch narrower with a 410 mm tip rocker, a Poplar and Carbon core, and a 15:85 character. Made for speed and deep conditions. 1,650 g at 178 cm. Co-branded with Protect Our Winters, a partnership we're proud of.

•             Boost Junior POW: For young skiers who want a fast, stable ski. 76 mm underfoot, 220 mm tip rocker, 950 g at 135 cm.

Binding pairing: The Core FR 15 EVO is our full-featured freeride binding, with an adjustable toe release and a 7 to 15 DIN range. The Core 12 EVO is the lighter option for skiers who don't need that top-end release. Juniors get the Grom 5, with 50 mm of boot sole length adjustment for growing feet.

Performance: Ultra

Light, fast and precise. Ultra is for ski mountaineers and racers who've decided every gram matters, and who need it to hold together on a big day.

•             Ultra 89: The widest Ultra, for skiers who want more under their feet without much extra weight. 1,130 g at 170 cm, 40:60 character. Tailored for high-alpine terrain and big descents.

•             Ultra 79: Ascent-oriented and very light, with 79 mm underfoot and 970 g at 172 cm. A 75:25 character for advanced skiers and mountaineers where fast and light counts.

•             Ultra 65: The race ski. 700 g at 161 cm, a 90:10 character, and a micro sidewall. Built for skimo racing and fast training days.

Binding pairing: For racing, the Ultra World Cup Brake (135 g, ISMF compliant). For the lightest possible setup, the Ultra World Cup at 110 g. If you want an adjustable release and more riser options, go with the Pin Up 8 or 10 EVO.

Special: Off Limits and Off Trace

For the skier who doesn't fit a box.

•             Off Limits: 130 cm of "whatever you need." Approach skis for high alpine climbs, snowshoe replacements, tightly wooded powder stashes and more.

•             Off Trace: Made for low-angle backcountry skiing, with an integrated mohair kick zone for good kick and glide and no fish-scale buzz.

Our bindings are made with ATK in Italy, which is why you'll see Hagan and ATK names side by side. And if you're mounting your own, our mounting and FAQ page covers the details.

One rule of thumb: if you can't decide, the Pin Up 10 EVO is the safest answer for most All-Round and Performance skiers, and the Core FR 15 EVO is the answer for anyone who skis the way Boost skiers do.

Don't forget the skins

Skins are the other half of the setup. The Hagan Smartglue Skin fits our Core, Ultra and Pure skis and the Boost 105, and a separate Boost Smartglue skin covers the Boost 99. The Hagan Hybrid Skin is 100% mohair for Core, Ultra and Pure models.

Still around, but not in the new catalog

A few skis are no longer part of the 26-27 catalog but are still available while supplies last: the Pure series, Core Carbon 92, Ultra 84 and Boost 94 POW. They're in the Outlet if one is exactly what you need.

Still not sure?

Ask us, or ask your local shop. Choosing a setup is a lot easier with a person in front of you, and our retailers know this lineup well. Find a retailer near you.

See you on the skin track.
